Summary, etc. En 1991, un grupo de neurocientíficos de la Universidad de Parma hizo un asombroso descubrimiento mientras estudiaba el el funcionamiento del sistema nervioso en primates no humanos. Su inesperado hallazgo permitió identificar el fundamento neurobiológico subyacente a la capacidad de comprender las acciones y los estados mentales de las otras personas: unas neuronas denominadas <<espejo>> que se activan tanto cuando llevamos a cabo una acción como cuando la observamos en los demás. Su identificación representó un punto de inflexión, porque las neurona espejo proporcionaron por primera vez una base celular y neuroanatómica para comprender la interacción social, la empatía y la interpretación de las acciones de los demás. En el presente volumen se repasan los laboratorios donde las neuronas espejo fueron observadas en acción por vez primera, y se profundiza en la explicación de qué son, donde se encuentran, que función cumplen y qué ocurre cuando esta se ve alterada.
